Hearts Pumping, Rejoicing

Hearts Pumping, Rejoicing

Know what we all have in common? A heart! Can you name any of the parts of the heart? Download this activity and see if you can!

Your heart has four chambers that work together like a pump, delivering blood to your body. There are two pumps on the right side of the heart. These chambers receive blood that has already been traveling around your body, back to the heart. This process of moving blood through the body is called circulation and it repeats itself all day, every day throughout your life!

With each heartbeat, the right side pumps blood to the lungs where it picks up oxygen from the air you breathe. The blood then travels to the left side of your heart where it is pumped out through the biggest artery in your body called the aorta. The blood is then delivered to areas of your body that need it….kind of like pipes deliver water to the different parts of your house in the kitchen, bathroom and laundry room.

When you exercise, you need more oxygenated blood. Your heart has to work harder! That's why it beats faster after exercise. The sound of your heartbeat is the sound of valves in your heart closing. Valves act like doors in your heart, controlling how much blood goes in and out.

Did You Know?

Did You Know?

In Psalm 24:1, we read, "The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it..." Here are some facts to help you and your family and school to be good stewards of God's gorgeous planet and recycle more.

  • More than 75% of the waste we generate is recyclable, but generally Americans only recycle about 30% of it.
  • A glass bottle will take 40,000 years to decompose if it's not recycled.
  • Plastic takes 450 years just to begin decomposing. It takes another 50 to 80 years to completely decompose.
  • On average, people buy three new electronic devices each year. The materials can be recycled and reused. Find a recycling center or sell your old devices instead of throwing them out with your trash.
  • Food scraps and other organic garbage create methane, a greenhouse gas 20 times stronger than carbon dioxide. Consider composting to keep it from going in landfills.

Sing a Song!

What a Friend We Have in Jesus
by Joseph Scriven,
Lutheran Service Book, #770

What a friend we have in Jesus,
All our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer!
Oh, what peace we often forfeit;
Oh, what needless pain we bear
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer!
Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble any where?
We should never be discouraged
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful
Who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our ev'ry weakness
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
